Scott S. Cairns

Scott is a certified circuit court mediator for the Florida Supreme Court and a certified mediator for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. Before devoting his practice entirely to mediation, Scott was a partner with McGuireWoods LLP. For more than 38 years, he represented clients in a broad range of cases, often involving sensitive and high profile issues. His litigation experience  involved a wide variety of matters, including employment, tort, and commercial litigation in trial and appellate courts across the United States. He has been recognized by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America survey and was named to "Florida Super Lawyers."

Scott has extensive experience in discrimination and harassment cases under federal and state laws. He represented public employers litigating Constitutional issues. He handled class actions under Rule 23 and opt-in claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act. He litigated a variety of commercial litigation matters including theft of trade secrets, breach of non-competition agreements, shareholder and partnership litigation involving claims of breaches of fiduciary duty and other corporate governance issues, fraud in the sale of real property and securities, insurance coverage, and other contract issues. Scott counseled clients in high-exposure toxic tort, product liability and personal injury matters and has litigation and trial experience in these matters across the country.

He counseled clients concerning issues associated with their mergers, acquisitions and layoffs; the drafting of employment agreements, non-competition agreements and related employment policies; as well as investigation of sexual harassment claims. He also counseled on traditional labor issues under both the National Labor Relations Act and the Railway Labor Act, such as union campaigns, contract negotiations, labor disputes and defense of unfair labor practice charges.
